Alert Travellers foil 9-yr-old’s kidnap in train
Passengers onboard the Pawan Express foiled a kidnapping bid near Thane during the early hours of Monday and nabbed two abductors red-handed, while they were trying to escape with a nine-year-old girl.
According to the Kurla GRP, the rescued girl Shaahid Hussain Shaikh (9) was travelling along with her mother Shabnamara on Pawan Express, when two abductors tried to kidnap her.
“The two abductors boarded the train from Nashik Road and kept a watch on Shaahid till the train reached Thane. They sat near the passage close to the berth where the mother and daughter were sleeping. At around 3.15 am, the duo tried to kidnap Shaahid when her mother was fast asleep,” said S.S. Dhumal, senior police inspector, Kurla GRP, adding, “As soon as the kidnappers tried to lift Shaahid, Shabnamara woke up and raised an alarm. This alerted other passengers who nabbed the kidnappers.”
The duo, identified as Santosh Lokhande (25) and Prakash (22), were handed over to the railway police when the train reached Kurla, and have been remanded to police custody. They work as hawkers in Kurla.

Undertrial dies after suicide bid
Age Correspondent
Mumbai, Oct. 8
A murder accused, who had hanged himself in a police lock up five days ago, died while under treatment on Sunday night.
According to police sources, Suresh Arote (32), an Amboli resident, was arrested on September 25 for allegedly strangling his wife in the heat of an argument. He had initially tried to pass off her death as the result of an illness, but the post-mortem examination nailed his lie and the Amboli police arrested him for murder. He was subsequently remanded to police custody.
“On Wednesday night, Arote took off his shirt and trousers and fashioned a noose. He hanged himself from a bar across the ceiling, but was seen by some of his fellow prisoners, who raised an alarm. Arote was rushed to Cooper Hospital where he was under treatment. He died late on Sunday night,” said an officer with the Amboli police.
