Announcement to be made on May 1
State revenue minister Balasaheb Thorat on Thursday said that the decision on bifurcation of the Thane district would be taken on May 1, which is the state’s foundation day. The announcement was made in the legislative Assembly during the question hour.
The issue was raised by MNS legislator Bala Nandgaonkar. The MNS leader had sought the status of the bifurcation process, which has been pending since last year.
In his reply, the revenue minister said, “The bifurcation of the district into two is under process. We have decided to announce it on the day when the state of Maharashtra was formed.”
The demand for division of Thane, which is the nation’s biggest district, has been pending for a long time. The existing Thane district covers seven municipal corporations.
According to officials, a new administrative district in the name of Palghar will be created. The government had earlier considered making the announcement on January 26.
In another development, Mr Thorat has also announced to build a state-of-the-art convention centre at Kalwa in the Thane district.
The government has identified a 72-acre plot in Kalwa, which it plans to use for various state government buildings, including an engineering college, offices of the deputy registrar, health, sports and education department, he informed.
The minister also accepted the demand of NCP legislator Jitendra Awhad to name the convention after former chief minister late Vilasrao Deshmukh.
