Another paper leak scare haunts MU

On Thursday, when students appearing for the third year Bachelor of Management Studies (TYBMS) reported to the examination centre, they were again haunted by the paper leak demons of Wednesday. Students said that they were asked to wait outside the examination hall for 15 to 20 minutes well after the scheduled time, which they assumed was due to the paper of the day being leaked again. University of Mumbai officials, however, denied the paper leak theory and said that the delay was due to precautionary measures being taken to ensure that the paper was not leaked.

According to a student appearing for the paper at Dombivali, 10 minutes before the start of the exam, students who had taken their seats were asked to leave the examination hall and wait outside. With Wednesday’s paper leak fiasco fresh, the move by the examination centre authorities set off alarm bells that the paper had been leaked again.

“A message bearing questions of the subject were circulating since yesterday evening and hence, we thought that the paper had leaked again,” said the student. Even as frantic messages and phone calls to confirm the leak were being made, the students were asked to take their seats 20 minutes later.

When asked about the alleged paper leak, Dr Naresh Chandra, pro-vice-chancellor, MU denied it and said, “After the paper leak that took place on Wednesday, we decided to change Thursday’s paper as a precautionary measure. The decision was not disclosed to the examination centres due to security reasons. The fresh question papers were sent to exam centres through email, which caused the delay of around 10 to 15 minutes. The University, however, ensured that the loss of time was compensated as supervisors were instructed to give appropriate extra time to the students.”

Meanwhile, the parents of students were not amused by the University’s tactics and said that such measures only added to the stress that the students were already undergoing. Kirti Chavani, a parent said, “The University is inefficient and it has been proven beyond doubt after the two paper leaks. Rather than pacifying the students, they adopt methods that only add to the tension that they are already undergoing. The government or the courts should take cognisance of the matter and discipline the University officials.”
