An Audi R8 worth nearly `1.3 to 1.8 crore was found charred on the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sealink during a car rally on Sunday afternoon. Son of a real estate businessman, Bhavesh Thakkar (23), who was driving the car, has blamed the company for the mishap.
Bhavesh is a resident of Worli and his father Manish Thakkar, who runs a construction business, owns the car. At around 12.20 pm, a traffic constable saw the rear end of the Audi car engulfed in fire and the fire control room was alerted.
By the time the fire engines reached, the car was fully burnt. The fire was doused and the car was towed away, but the smooth flow of traffic on the Sealink was disrupted for nearly one hour.
Incidentally, many posh cars were seen on the Bandra-Worli Sealink as a part of the Parx Supercar Show 2013.
Speaking to this newspaper, Bhavesh said, “I’ve no idea how the car caught fire. It’s the company’s fault. I was with my friend Aditya Kapoor (22). We had gone there for a drive. Luckily, we both got out in the nick of time without injuries. I don’t know what went wrong, but I was not racing. We had given the car for repairs last week. But we have not modified the car since we bought it.”
On being contacted, two of the representatives from Audi, Mumbai refused to comment on the issue.
Spokesperson Kapil Kulkarni of the Parx Supercar Show 2013 said, “The Audi was not part of our rally. But, our members helped the driver get out of the car.”
Investigating official sub-inspector, Anant Raorane of Worli police station said, “As of now we have not registered any case against Bhavesh. His car was not part of the rally. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) and the fire officials will find out how the fire started following which we will decide the further course of action.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
