Azad Maidan fast nod will be with riders
Even as India Against Corruption members claim that they received a verbal nod to protest at Azad Maidan, a senior police officer said that giving permission for that venue would only create an adverse law and order and logistics situation.
Requesting anonymity, a senior police officer said that even if permission is granted, it would come with several conditions. “Azad Maidan can accommodate only 3,000 persons at a given time, but we are expecting at least 30,000 to visit the venue. South Mumbai will come to a virtual standstill and will affect business in the area as the days of the fast are falling on working days,” he said.
The officer also pointed out that the IAC members are also yet to get permission from the traffic police and the fire brigade. “The IAC has not sought permissions from the fire brigade and traffic police either. There are also constrains to make emergency arrangements, such as ambulances at the venue,” he said.
Meanwhile, the IAC moved Bombay high court, as its appeal to CM Prithviraj Chavan to waive off or reduce the charges for the MMRDA grounds did not yield any results.
After filing the petition on Thursday evening, IAC stated that the petition is against the MMRDA and the state government.
