Azad Maidan: two Accused summoned
The Metropolitan Magistrate court on Thursday, summoned two accused from the Azad Maidan riots case to remain present before the court on Friday, to record their statements in an assault case registered by the duo against few police officials. The complaint was registered by accused, Afzal Afak Sheikh and Ansar Ali Qureshi in the form of an application, claiming that when they were in judicial custody, the police had brutally assaulted the accused.
The application further says that they were assaulted so brutally that it left marks on their bodies. When the accused asked the police why were they assaulting them without proving the charges, the police refused to answer any questions. Advocate Khalid Azmi, the counsel for the accused said, “Even I was shocked to see that my clients were brutally assaulted by the policemen, and that too without even proving the charges which were levelled against them. Hence, we had filed an application seeking action against the policemen.
Further, the magistrate had elevated the matter to the Principal judge. The PJ asked the magistrate to seek an inquiry against the police officers.

HC quashes pil challenging land allotment
Mumbai, Nov. 22: Observing that the Maharashtra government had followed all norms and procedures while allotting land to two housing societies meant for judges in suburban Bandra, the Bombay high court on Thursday dismissed a public interest litigation challenging the allotment.
A division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice R.V. More dismissed a PIL filed by activist Nitin Deshpande alleging that the state government showed undue favours while allotting land to Siddhant and Nyay Sagar societies, which are meant for retired and sitting judges of the higher judiciary.
“There was no haste in allotment of land to the societies. We reject the contention of the petitioner that the allotment was illegal with regard to deletion of reservation. The allotment was in accordance with rules and there is no illegality,” the bench observed. It further held that it was not illegal for the sitting judges who have been allotted flats in the societies to lease the flats. —PTI
