Azmi sentenced to 2 yrs in jail for provocative speech
The Mazgaon magistrate court on Monday convicted Samajwadi Party MLA
Abu Azmi along with four other accused for delivering provocative
speeches in a public meeting.
The court held them guilty under Section 153 (A) and Section 153 (B)
and sentenced them to two years imprisonment.
The judgment comes in a case registered against the MLA and four other
accused for delivering provocative speeches in the year 2000. The
court has also slapped the accused with a fine of `11,000.
Public prosecutor in the case, advocate Varsha Doshi said, “Since the
accused have been convicted to two years in jail, the court has
released them on bail, so that they can file an appeal against the
conviction order in the appellant court of the sessions court. But the
accused has to file this appeal within a period of 60 days.”
The case dates back to the year 2000 when Azmi had allegedly given a
provocative speech at Nagpada in south Mumbai against Shiv Sena chief
Bal Thackeray and Congress leader Narayan Rane.
