Bachchan to launch BMC drive
Amitabh Bachchan will launch the BMC’s much-hyped Swachh Mumbai Prabhodhan Abhiyan, a new cleanliness drive aimed at cleaning the slum areas. The veteran film actor will also participate in the civic body’s public awareness campaign for this drive.
Standing committee chairman Rahul Shewale said, “We had planned to rope in several celebrities from the film industry to promote the BMC’s Swachh Mumbai Prabhodhan Abhiyan. When we approached Mr Bachchan, he willingly accepted our proposal.”
According to civic sources, Shiv Sena, the ruling party in the BMC, has decided to launch this scheme on January 23, which is also the birth anniversary of its late party supremo Bal Thackeray. Mr Bachchan will inaugurate the cleanliness drive at the mayor’s bungalow on 4 pm.
Mr Shewale said, “Mr Bachchan will also appear in the BMC’s public awareness campaign to be made for the Swachh Mumbai Prabodhan Abhiyan. We are even planning to include the NGOs, advanced locality managements (ALMs) and local colleges to spread the message of cleanliness in the campaign.”
The civic body has announced the campaign for the cleaning of slum areas, where along with the collection of garbage, the new drive will also include the cleaning of small nullahs and public toilets. In this drive, the BMC will provide monthly funds to the nominated cleanliness agencies, which will also have to click photographs of its work for effective implementation.
“In this drive, the volunteers will be asked to segregate the waste as dry and wet. The BMC will also clear garbage in the government colonies like the MbPT, Mhada, etc.” said a senior civic official.
