'Bangladeshi' with Aadhar card, voter's ID?
Mumbai Police has arrested 13 men and women living in the city on charges of being illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. One of the men has an Aadhar card, a voters identity card and a PAN card, according to Special Branch DCP Sanjay Shintre.
Shintre told The Asian Age the police had received a tip-off about these people. “We raided hotel Mumbai Fancy on P. D’Mello road on January 7 and arrested six Bangladeshis and two Indian nationals after receiving information that Bangladeshis work in this hotel”, he said.
Shintre said the police had "verified" their nationality by speaking to them. "They replied in a Bangla dialect that is usually used by Bangladeshi nationals. We then asked them to produce documents that can prove that they are Indian nationals, but many of them failed to produce any of such documents or I-D cards", the sleuth, who is not a Bengali speaker, said.
"But, we found an Aadhar card from the possession of one of the accused. We also found a West Bengal Sarpanch certificate, a voter’s I-D card issued from West Bengal, a PAN card and a driving license issued from a Mumbai RTO. We suspect the accused procured these documents and cards by producing duplicate documents", added Shintre.
DCP Shintre said, during interrogation the accused had said that an agent had taken money from them and had helped them procure these documents. “We are writing to concerned authorities associated with Aadhar to review their document verification process. The easy availability of Aadhaar card is a worrying factor”, DCP Shintre added.
The arrested people have been booked under relevant sections of Indian Passport Act and Indian Citizenship Act. The Aadhar card is considered a valid document for proof of Indian identity, as is the voter’s identification card.
