Bill for street vendors likely soon: maken
A bill to regulate street vendors in public areas and protect their rights is likely to be passed in the ongoing Budget Session. The Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood & Regulation of Street Vending) Bill is likely to be passed in this ongoing Budget Session, Union housing development and urban poverty alleviation minister Ajay Maken told reporters in Mumbai on Tuesday.
“We have proposed certain amendments to the Bill, which is currently pending with the standing committee. We expect it to be passed in the current session,” he said.
The ministry has proposed certain amendments in the Bill, which includes granting of hawkers’ licences to 2.5 per cent of the population of any city. “This Bill is aimed at regulating street vendors in public areas and protect their rights. With these amendments we will be able to organise street vendors and ensure that they are not creating nuisance for vehicular traffic as well as for pedestrians,” Mr Maken said. By legalising street vending, municipal corporations will also be able to generate revenues, he said.

8 in police custody for forex fraud
Nashik, Feb. 26: A local court remanded eight out of 12 accused, including a suspected Bangladeshi national, to two days police custody for allegedly duping customers who wanted US dollars in return for Indian rupees at a cheaper rate. The remaining four women accused in the case were remanded to judicial custody after all of them were produced before the court on Monday evening, police said.
The gang of 12 members was busted by city police in Gangapurgaon area on Sunday. They used to assure dollars at low rates in exchange of Indian rupees, but they conned customers by arranging the dollars at the top and bottom of a bundle along with blank card sheets inside. The accused women have been identified as Sakina Khan, Rina Shaikh, Remam Begam and Phiroza Begam. — PTI
