BMC to buy machinery for sewage
For the effective preventive maintenance of sewer lines and sewage pumping stations in the city, the BMC has decided to buy sewer cleaning machines and high capacity suction units.
Conservancy workers suffer from severe health hazards by cleaning the sewer lines manually. So, the sewer-cleaning machines will be implemented to do away with manual cleaning, the civic officials said. “The sewer cleaning machine will enhance mechanisation in cleaning of sewers as well as prevent labourers’ contact with sewage. These machines will be purchased for each ward and main sewer divisions,” said Laxman Vhatkar, director, engineering (services and projects).
The BMC has also proposed to hire high-capacity suction units, high capacity suction plus jetting units with recycling facility for main sewer divisions. A provision of `26 crore is proposed in the budget for these machines.
“We have decided to buy a silt drying machine for this purpose, which will be helpful in drying the silt quickly,” Mr Vhatkar added. A provision of `4 crore has been made in the budget for this.
According to the civic officials, the strength of drainage staff will also be increased in suburbs. “In the last 25 years, there has been a big growth in sewerage infrastructure in the suburbs for which increased manpower is needed. It is also proposed to outsource some part of maintenance activities to substantially reduce the number of drainage complaints,” he added. BMC’s recent study of all 49 pumping stations, it was revealed that augmentation of 14 pumping stations is necessary to maintain the sewage level in wet well of these pumping stations at optimum level. After augmentation, the surcharged condition in some of the sewer line networks will be reduced and there will be reduction in siltation in the sewer network.
