BMC extends water cut to Wednesday
Mumbaikars will have to brace for water cuts till Wednesday, as certain glitches during the pipeline work on Monday has extended the work period till Wednesday — double the time than the schedule that was announced.
The BMC’s hydraulic department faced problems pertaining to the pipe walls while repairing the pipeline on Monday. Due to this, the work that started Monday and was scheduled to be finished within 24 hours will now take 48 hours, and so, the water cuts imposed in the city on Monday and Tuesday has been extended till Wednesday.
“We have no option but to extend the period of water cut. However, it won’t be a 100 per cent cut,” said Vijay Khabale-Patil, BMC public relations officer, adding, “100 per cent water cut was announced in Nahur, Bhandup, Kanjurmarg and Vikhroli, but we’ll provide water with less pressure to these areas during the morning till Wednesday.”
Chembur, Deonar, Govandi, Mankhurd, Ghatkopar and Mulund will also face 40 per cent cuts in water supply till Wednesday, while the rest will have 20 per cent cuts.
On Monday, citizens used the available water judiciously, but are now dreading the rough couple of days ahead; some are willing to pay extra money for water tankers.
“We used the water stored in the tanks carefully. But now we may have to rely on water tankers if the supply isn’t restored till Tuesday. A single water tanker costs roughly `2,200, of which the water suppliers might demand `3,000 on Tuesday due to the demand,” said Suresh Memane, a resident and officer bearer of Parivar Society in Kanjurmarg (east).
