BMC files cases against 92 societies

On the backdrop of rising dengue cases in the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to file court cases against 92 housing societies in the city for not taking enough preventive measures to prevent mosquito breeding. More than 60 per cent of these societies are high-rises and multi-storied buildings.
According to civic figures, dengue has spread rapidly across the city during monsoon, with 400 cases reported this year. September has already recorded 38 cases. The vector-borne disease has also taken four lives so far.
The BMC has taken action against 92 housing societies under Section 381B of the BMC Act, which allows the civic body to take legal action for ignoring the warnings issued earlier. The BMC has asked its legal department to prosecute these buildings in the metropolitan magistrate court.
“Mosquito breeding spots were found in the premises of these buildings and they have repeatedly ignored BMC’s warnings about not taking preventive measures to curb it. Hence, we decided to file the FIR against them,” said a senior civic official.
According to civic officials, the aedes egypti mosquitoes are known to breed in flower-pots, money plants, discarded bottles, tyres, etc. Civic officials have also found mosquitoes breeding in feng shui plants in city homes. The BMC has been undertaking joint campaign with NGOs to spread awareness in high-rises on how to prevent water accumulation in their premises to prevent mosquito breeding.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
