BMC gears up for high tide fury next week
With next week being the week of high tides, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has put its machinery on high alert to face any eventuality. The sea will rise above 4.5 metres for consecutive six days next week, keeping the civic officials and people living on coastline on their toes.
Any tide above 4.5 metres is considered as high tide. These
tides are always a cause of concern, as they combined with heavy rainfall result in water-logging in the low-lying areas in the city.
According to the civic officials, the high tides will start on June 23 (Sunday) with 4.72 metres, followed by 4.8 metres on the
next day. On June 25 and June 26, there will be high tides of 4.97 metres and 4.93 metres respectively. The next two days, June 27 and 28 will witness tides of 4.7 metres and 4.5 metres respectively.
Municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte said,“Any tide more than
4.5 metre is considered as a high tide. If a heavy rainfall of more than 65 mm in a day coincides with these high tides,
there is a possibility of water-logging in low-lying areas. Hence, we have asked all the concerned agencies to
be on alert on these days.”
In fact, next month too, there are five days (from July 22 to 26) of high tides above five metres. There is also a possibility of high rainfall during this period of the year.
