BMC hikes health workers’ pay

In what can be termed as a Ganeshotsav gift to health post workers, the BMC has decided to raise their monthly stipend from `2,500 to `4,000.
There had been a long pending demand and even threats of strike from the health post workers (Aarogya Sevika) to increase their honorarium. The hike will put a financial burden of `6.12 crore on the BMC exchequer and will be implemented with retrospective effect from June 12.
“Considering the inflation and the amount of work done, we have decided to increase the stipend of health post workers. It is because of their consistent efforts, the malaria epidemic, which had acquired dangerous proportions couple of years ago, has come under control,” said Rahul Shewale, BMC’s standing committee chairman.
However, like the anganwadi workers of the state government, the working hours of health post workers have also been increased from four to five hours.
Prakash Devdas, president of the Brihanmumbai Mahanagarpalika Kamgar Karmachari Mahasangh said that the health post workers have always been neglected by the civic administration. The last honorarium raise was done in April 2010, when their stipend was increased from `1,500 to `2,500.
