BMC to install bins by nullahs
To prevent slumdwellers from dumping garbage into nullahs, the BMC is planning to install dustbins along the nullahs at around 400 spots in the city.
Every year, the civic body carries out a nullah-cleaning drive before monsoons to clean city culverts. However, people continuing to dump waste material into cleaned nullahs, especially in slum areas, has always remained a cause for concern for the civic officials.
“People in slum areas treat nullahs as a dumping ground. Throwing garbage, especially plastic bags, is the main cause of nullah clogging. Despite repeated appeals, they keep on dumping garbage into nullahs after desilting is done,” said Laxman Vhatkar, director (engineering).
“To avoid this, we are planning to increase the number of dustbins along the nullahs. Around 400 spots have been identified and we have sent this list to the solid waste management department,” he added.
“There is a need to instill a civic sense in citizens. No matter how much nullah cleaning we carry out, people keep on dumping garbage in them. This sends a wrong signal that nullah cleaning is not being done properly,” said a senior civic official.

Mumbai, Jan. 20
Two youngsters, racing their bikes at 120 kmph without wearing their helmets on the southbound stretch of Girgaum Chowpatty in the early hours of Sunday, collided with a taxi, one after the other, while it was taking a U-turn.
According to the DB Marg police, the incident took place at around 2.30 am near Ideal junction on the NS Purandare Road. The two accused, who were racing on their CBZ and FZ Yamaha bikes, did not anticipate the possibility of the taxi taking a U-turn and rammed into its rear.
The impact of the accident was such that the front tyre of one of the bikes got dislodged while the taxi’s rear was badly damaged. One of the bikers injured his face, jaw and broke his tooth while the other suffered an injury to his pelvic region and other parts. The taxi driver somehow escaped with minor injuries. The two accused (aged 20 and 22), were rushed a nearby hospital along with the taxi driver. Soon after being discharged, the duo was arrested for rash driving causing grievous hurt.
