BMC may revoke 10% hike in theatre fees
Taking note of the fervent demands from theatre producers, the BMC is planning to revoke the decision to hike theatre fees by 10 per cent every year. The move is expected to benefit several theatre producers, who perform plays in municipal theatres. In addition to this, the civic body is also planning to set up a theatre in the eastern suburbs.
The civic body on Monday felicitated a well-known Marathi actor Prashant Damle for creating a record in the Guinness Book of World Records with 10,700 performances of his Marathi play Gela Madhav Kunikade. During his speech, Damle, who is also a theatre producer, asked the civic body to reconsider its decision to increase theatre fees by 10 per cent every year.
“The drama producers are facing lot of financial problems due to the BMC’s decision to increase theatre fees. The Marathi theatre is also going through a lean patch. To help it, the civic body should revoke its decision to increased theatre fees by 10 per cent every year,” he said.
There are three BMC-owned theatres in the city — Dinanath Natyagriha at Vile Parle, Prabodhankar Thackeray Natyagriha at Borivali and Kalidas Natyagriha at Mulund.
Damle also said, barring Kalidas Natyagriha there is not a single municipal theatre in the stretch from Dadar to Thane and that the civic body should set up a theatre in the eastern suburbs.
Replying to this, mayor Sunil Prabhu said, the BMC would positively consider a demand to revoke hike in theatre tax rates.
