BMC to relax road tender terms
After being criticised for failing to attract reputed companies for road works, the BMC has now decided to roll out a red carpet for them by relaxing tender conditions.
Despite spending crores of rupees, the condition of majority of city roads remains pathetic. Corporators have alleged that the coterie of small contractors is ruining the roads by carrying out shoddy works and the civic body’s inability to rope in big companies like Gamon India, L&T, Hindustan Construction etc has led to this mess.
In a recently held meeting with officials of top companies, the BMC has assured to remove all the obstacles in the process of inviting road tenders.
Standing committee chairman Rahul Shewale, “During the meeting, we decided to change four major tender conditions.”
Accordingly, the BMC has decided not to insist on ready mix plants and batch mix plants for the road works. Even a joint venture with other companies will be allowed for road projects. Companies will also be permitted to carry out 30 per cent of road works from other companies. Instead of inviting small tenders, an entire tender of bigger amount will be invited at a time.
Repairs of major roads like Marine Drive, Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road, LBS Marg etc will be allocated to these major companies. The BMC will soon invite tenders for road works of `900 crore.
