BMC school supplies plan flops again

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has failed in its promise to deliver 27 school supplies to civic students in the first week of school reopening once again. In fact, even after one month since the schools have reopened, kids in several municipal schools have not yet received them. Corporators slammed the civic administration in the civic general body meeting on Thursday for this.
Dr Saeeda Khan of the NCP said, “The contractors had promised to supply quality material, but students in municipal schools have received damaged items. Even the material supplied was not also according to their specifications.”
MNS corporator Chetan Kadam said, “Every year the proposal to supply school supplies is brought up late, making the delay in distribution inevitable. The civic body does not have data about how many students have received the items.”
In a bid to provide aid to poor and needy children, the BMC distributes 27 educational accessories of various types, which includes uniforms, books, bags, raincoats, shoes, tiffin boxes etc. to all civic students.
This year, the BMC had announced that the distribution of educational items would take place in the first week of school reopening. Mayor Sunil Prabhu had launched the school kit distribution at the Los Angeles Municipal School in Matunga on the first day that schools reopened with much fanfare.
BJP corporator Vinod Shelar said, “Along with the school items the civic body has also failed to provide the special booklet made for rainwater harvesting awareness to municipal students. The booklet was prepared to create awareness about rainwater harvesting and water conservation and was even released last year by the mayor. However, out of 4,34,130 students, only one lakh have received these booklets so far,” he said.
A senior civic official confirmed that many schools were yet to receive the supplies. “It is true that the educational items have not been supplied to many schools,” he said adding that the BMC was
planning to complete the distribution at the earliest.
