BMC starts drive to stop littering in nullah
The BMC has started a public awareness campaign to prevent people from throwing garbage into nullahs during the monsoons to prevent clogging.
Civic officials have claimed to have carried out over 95 per cent nullah cleaning work across the city. However, their
contention is that people continue to dump waste material into cleaned nullahs.
Mayor Sunil Prabhu and civic chief Sitaram Kunte has made a public appeal to citizens to keep nullahs clean during the monsoons. During the public awareness campaign, the civic body will be appealing to people to not to throw garbage, plastic bags and bottles and waste material with the help of announcements in newspapers and radio channels. The posters and banners carrying this message will also be put up across the city.
“Citizens should not throw garbage, especially plastic bags, into the drains, which is the main cause of clogging of nullahs. Despite repeated appeals, people keep dumping garbage into nullahs after the desilting work is done,” said Laxman Vhatkar, director (engineering). The civic body collects the silt from the nullahs and ferries it to the dumping grounds.
