Board bends exam rule for differently-abled student
For the first time in the history of conducting board exams, the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) has permitted a student to take the help of a computer for appearing for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exam.
On Tuesday, Siddharth Das, a 20-year-old differently-abled student from Ruchiram Thadani School for the Hearing Impaired, Chembur wrote the English paper on a computer arranged for him at Loreta Convent School in Chembur.
Board officials said that it was made possible after the chairman of the board, using his special powers, permitted the student to write the exam using a computer.
Speaking about his son who suffers from multiple disabilities, Vasadeb Das, a government employee said that despite disabilities like hearing issues, speech impairment, his son was very keen on appearing for the board exam.
“Realising my son’s inclination, the school set the ball rolling by writing to the board to allow Siddharth to use a computer to type the answers for the SSC exams. Siddharth cannot speak legibly nor is his writing legible due to lack of control on his hands,” said Mr Das.
He added that apart from the school, his son’s cause was also taken up by MLC Kapil Patil who Mr Das met and apprised of Siddharth’s condition.
The efforts of the school and Mr Patil resulted in the board calling a special statewide meeting of the nine division heads wherein Sarjerao Jadhav, chairman MSBSHSE, Pune used his special powers and made the exception for Siddharth.
