Board issues notices to deficient institutes
The Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education (MSBTE) has issued a showcause notices to 268 institutions out of the 1,031
institutes under its jurisdiction for non-compliance of norms to upgrade facilities.
The revelation comes after academic monitoring committees visited these institutions over the past one year. The institutes have been given time till May 22 to upgrade facilities or face de-recognition. Last year, the MSBTE had cracked its whip on 34 such institutions for non-compliance.
According to Dr P.M. Khodke, director, MSBTE, the academic monitoring committees weighed institutes on set parameters — academic performance, infrastructure and development, human resource management and post academic services — provided by the institutes.
“A final report was prepared and those institutions found wanting in any of the parameters were issued a showcause notices on April 22. The institutions have been given a month to rectify the shortcomings and submit a report by May 22,” said Dr Khodke.
Last year, the MSBTE had issued showcause notices to over 300 institutes, out of which 34 had failed to comply and consequently were de-recognised.
Dr Khodke added that increased awareness and fear of being de-recognised is having an impact, and institutes were making efforts. The institutions include 695 that require AICTE approval and offer diploma courses in engineering and pharmacy, and 336 institutions that do not require AICTE approval and offer other technical courses.
“In the last one year, new institutions have come up and their existence is solely based on compliance. If they fail to comply, they would lose their recognition. Our aim is to ensure that the quality of education imparted in these institutions is up to the mark to ensure that students get value for their money,” added Dr
Khodke.
