Chavan to inaugurate Milan overbridge today
Providing much convenience to Mumbaikars, the rail overbridge on Milan Subway will be inaugurated by chief minister Prithviraj Chavan Friday evening.
With the completion of the bridge, especially before the onset of monsoon, commuters would have an hassle-free east-west connectivity.
The bridge will provides a solution to the perennial problem of traffic congestion owing to water logging on Milan Subway during every monsoon, said an official. Of course, the original Milan subway route can still be used in other seasons if not during monsoon, he added.
Dilip Kawathkar, project director of MMRDA said, “The 700-metre long Milan flyover will provide two lanes each for Up and Down traffic and connect eastern and western suburbs
saving time, fuel and vehicle operating costs besides controlling pollution levels.”
The `83-crore rail overbridge at Milan subway, Santa Cruz, consumed two 450-tonne steel carriageways, whose launching was a most crucial part of project as even a single mistake could have ruined the operation of local trains, he added.
According to an engineer, “Carrying out heavy-duty activities in stipulated time at night while saving local trains’ network was really a challenge, which our team overcame successfully.”
MMRDA commissioner U.P.S Madan and other senior officials will be present for the ceremony. The flyover is estimated to carry over 35,000 vehicles daily.
