Child sex ratio improves compared to year 2011
The child sex ratio in Mumbai in 2012 has seen an improvement as compared to 2011. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, the sex ratio at birth for 2012 in the city was 922 girls against 1,000 males. In 2011, it was 917 girls born per 1,000 males.
However, though there is an increase in the child sex ratio in the city, it is still far away from the national average of 952 girls born per 1,000 males.
The child sex ratio, which indicates the number of girls born per 1,000 boys, has been declining in Maharashtra too. The state’s child sex ratio had fallen from 913 girls for every 1,000 boys in 2001 to 883 girls for 1,000 boys in 2011. To improve the situation, both the BMC and the state government implemented programmes to create awareness in people about female foeticide. The BMC also started checks on ultrasound clinics and seized 17 sonography machines from illegal centres in 2012 as against 13 in 2011.
“The increase in child sex ratio is very encouraging, though it is small. One of the major reasons for the increase can be attributed to the strict implementing the Pre-Conception and Pre Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act against doctors who violated the rules.” said a senior civic official.
