City temp rises, may drop again
After a chilly weekend, the temperature in Mumbai has started to register a rise once again. Though the minimum temperature is rising, the weather bureau has cautioned of another drop in temperature due to the imminent cold wave in the north.
On Tuesday, Colaba recorded a normal minimum temperature of 20.1 degree Celsius, while Santa Cruz recorded 15.4 degree Celsius — about three degrees below normal. The weather department has said that the temperatures are likely to rise a little more in the next few days, before another drop. “The Western Disturbance has now passed away, but the winds affecting the city are still north-easterly,” said V.K. Rajeev, director of weather forecast at the IMD, Mumbai.
The daytime temperature in the city, however, was high on Tuesday. While Colaba recorded a maximum temperature of 30.8 degree Celsius — 1.4 degrees above normal, Santa Cruz recorded 33.5 — three degrees above normal. Contrary to the high maximum temperatures, the humidity levels in the city were pretty low. The relative humidity recorded in Colaba and Santa Cruz in the morning was 70 and 75 per cent respectively. In the evening, however, Colaba and Santa Cruz recorded 64 per cent and 36 per cent respectively.
The weather department has said that there is likelihood of another cold wave hitting the country in a few days, which will also affect Mumbai. “Another Western Disturbance is currently persisting over Afghanistan. It will take another two-three days to come over the Indian sub-continent and depending on the direction of the wind, there may be another dip in the temperatures of the city,” Mr Rajeev said.
