Civic parking lots to go hi-tech
In the backdrop of growing complaints about people being cheated at the pay-and-park lots in the city, the BMC has decided to install a web-based parking system, in which printed receipts from a handheld device will be given to motorists so that they are not fleeced.
A senior civic official said, “The BMC will set up a centralised computer system to curb the overcharging nuisance in the parking lots of the civic body. In this system, all the parking lots will have handheld devices, which will release the payment receipts. These devices will be connected to the centralised server. The server will also record all the vehicle numbers along with details of the make of the vehicle, place, time and date.”
The GPS system of the device will also enable the system to register the parking lot and its contractor. The receipt, with the time stamp to record the duration for which the vehicle
was kept at the parking lot along with charges bracket accordingly, will be given to the vehicle owner while leaving the parking lot. The data of all vehicles will also be stored on the hard disk of the system, which can be further useful in case of any emergency.
According to the civic officials, there are 93 roadside pay-and-park lots in the city and the BMC has received a large number of complaints about cheating, especially in the island city, because of overcharging. “With this new system, we will able to get rid of overcharging complaints at parking lots,” the official said.
The civic body has allotted this contract to M/s Geodesic Limited, which has quoted `19,000 as the cost for each handheld device. The `6.84 lakh-proposal for 500 such devices will be tabled before the civic standing committee for approval on Wednesday.
