College alleges discrimination by university
The management of Royal College, Mira Road, has alleged that the University of Mumbai has been discriminating against them by not clearing the approval process for a Bachelor of Education (BEd) college for girls belonging to the minority community.
The management said that though they got the nod from the National Minority Commission (NMC), the University has been dragging its feet for the past four years.
“The NMC processed the file and we were given the go ahead in two months. The next step was to get the approval and affiliation from the MU, before we could start the college in Mira Road in 2008,” said Prof A.E. Lakdawala, principal of Royal College.
He said that the college management had written to the minister for higher education and had sought the intervention of the chancellor in the matter. The management had also petitioned the high court on the issue.
When asked about the delay, a University official said, “Every year, the University prepares a perspective plan, which is sent to the government for final approval. As the Univer-sity did not receive a nod from the government, the process was delayed.”
On Wednesday, however, the HC issued an order to the University to grant permission for the BEd college.

‘Each mono station must be unique’
The Metropolitan Commissioner Rahul Asthana on Wednesday said that each of the monorail stations in the city should get a unique identity so as to enable commuters to identify monorail stations, even without looking at the boards. “Use diverse colour schemes, designs and patterns, but give a unique identity to all the monorail stations. Each station must be distinct…It will not only help commuters identify stations easily, but also offer relief from the otherwise stressful sight of a concrete jungle,” said Mr Asthana to the contractors during his visit to the monorail car depot and monorail stations on Wednesday.
