Congress, NCP at loggerheads again
After a lull of three weeks, the ruling Congress and Nationalist Congress Party have once again started indulging in mud-slinging.
The sudden upheaval comes in the light of the forthcoming elections to the five municipal corporations in the state — Bhiwandi-Nijampur,Malegaon, Chandrapur, Parbhani and Latur, scheduled for April 15.
With Latur — one of the fastest developing cities in the state — being the main focus of the municipal elections, the NCP is leaving no stone unturned to expose Latur strongman Congress Union minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.
Mr Deshmukh is currently facing various charges of irregularities in the CAG report. His alleged involvement in the Adarsh Housing Society scam and the Supreme Court making strong observations against him in the case of allocation of Film City land to Subhash Ghai’s Whistling Woods Institute, have only added to the Union minister’s woes.
On Sunday, NCP’s state president Madhukar Pichad, while taking a dig at the Congress leader said, “There are irregularities in everything whether it is a project of creating manure from waste or a small water supply project. Now, it is up to the people here to decide what they want. They are capable of taking the call and this is the time to do it.”
In the absence of the Union minister, his son MLA Amit Deshmukh replied to the NCP’s allegations saying, “People making allegations should prove misappropriation even of a rupee in any of the projects in Latur. We are ready to face an inquiry. The Congress is not scared of any probe.”
Meanwhile, politicians across party lines have expressed discontentment over the scheduled date of April 15 for voting at Bhiwandi-Nijampur, Malegaon, Chandrapur, Parbhani and Latur, as the bigwigs are currently busy in the budget session. With just a week to go before the elections, parties claim to be unprepared.
