Convict hoodwinks cops, flees from jail
A 27-year old convict fled from the Byculla Jail on Monday morning. The convict, who was sentenced to a month in jail for an offence committed in Railway premises, was brought out of the jail for cleaning work, but he gave security personnel a slip and managed to flee. A case has been registered at the Nagpada police station in this regard.
The accused has been identified as Surya David John, a resident of Tulsi Baug area of Tardeo. John was arrested by the Rail Protection Force men under Sections 157 and 164 of the Railway Act. He was brought to the jail on March 28 after a local court sentenced him to a month’s imprisonment.
John was brought out of the jail with another inmate for cleaning the jail compound on Monday morning. “At around 10.15 am, while he was sweeping near the main gate, he hoodwinked police constable Pakhare and fled. Five policemen chased him in vain,” said an officer from Byculla Jail.
John was to be released from jail on April 24. “He was a drug addict, he may have fled for drugs that were not available to him inside. We are exploring this angle too,” said another jail official.
