Cop who shot self recovers

API Chandrakant Mahajan, who reportedly shot himself at the Chunabhatti police station, while on duty in the month of July has had a miraculous recovery, said doctors. Though the bullet entered from under the chin and exited from the head, piercing his tongue, none of his vital nerves were damaged, and his vision remained intact.
Mr Mahajan is still recovering in Surana Hospital, where he was rushed right after the incident, but is off the ventilator and conscious, informed Dr Prince Surana, director of Surana Hospital.
“The bullet entered from under the chin, the submental region, travelled through, the palate piercing the tongue, the nasal area called the maxillary sinus, and exited through the skull,” said Dr Surana. “It caused quite a bit of damage, but at the same time the fact that he has survived is nothing short of miraculous,” added Dr Surana.
Mahajan was brought to the hospital in a pool of blood on July 31, with no recordable blood pressure and pulse. A team of intensivists were brought in to first stabilise him before any procedure could be performed. “In the first five hours after hospitalisation, Mr Mahajan required eight units of blood, such was the loss of blood.”
On the third day, Mr Mahajan underwent an ENT surgery for repair of the floor of the mouth. There was a wound in the floor of mouth, base of the tongue, palate, orbit, and skull base. For next three days Mr Mahajan remained in the ICU. On the seventh day of his hospitalisation, a nuerosurgery was performed for the repair of his fractured skull. Due to the complication of the damage done by the bullet in the brain, the surgery was done endoscopically and it lasted for seven hours.
“So far Mr Mahajan has undergone two major nuerosurgeries and two ENT surgeries. He is well on his way to recovery. He is now in a position to respond to questions. However, there remains a chance of infection spreading to the brain due to the bullet which had travelled through the brain and also may have some neurological disorder like loss of sensation of smell, or may have some amount of memory loss.
But, this can only be assessed once he is completely back to normal,” said Dr Surana.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
