Cops nab serial offender

A notorious serial offender landed in police’s net on Monday after he was caught with an illegal firearm. The 30-year-old accused has 21 cases registered against him at Govandi and Shivaji Nagar police stations, most of which are cases of assault.
Mohammed Raees Shahjade Ansari (30) was nabbed from the Sukhada High School at Ghatkopar (east) at around 8.30 pm. “Based on a tip-off about his movements, we laid a trap near the school and took him into custody. A country-made revolver along with two live cartridges were recovered from him. He has been arrested for illegal possession of unlicensed weapons and ammunition under the Arms Act. We are interrogating him to find out the source of the weapons,” said a police officer from Pant Nagar police station.
H.C. Jagtap, who received the tip-off said, “One of our officers posed as a customer to buy the weapon from him. After finding the right opportunity, we arrested him.”
Ansari was arrested for — two cases under Sections 302 (murder), two cases under 307 (attempt to murder), four cases under 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), two cases under 387 (extortion), one case under 354 (outraging a woman’s modesty), one case under 596 (criminal intimidation) — and other cases under the Bombay Police Act and theft registered at Govandi police station.

Patkar fast enters sixth day
Mumbai, April 9: Social activist Medha Patkar’s indefinite fast against evictions in the Golibar area and to stop demolitions in the city, entered the sixth day on Tuesday.
Ms Patkar has alleged that Mumbai’s Slum Rehabilitation Scheme was marred by corruption, government indifference and builders’ atrocities.
She has demanded that work on the six Slum Rehabilitation Authority projects be stopped till the inquiry in the matter was completed.
Many people faced evictions and some of the houses in areas like Golibar were demolished to make way for slum rehab projects.
An associate of Patkar said the National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the chief secretary and DGP of Maharashtra, calling for their response to the issues of demolitions and the indefinite fast by Ms Patkar.
“Despite growing signs of weakness and deteriorating health like vomiting, body ache, back ache, Ms Patkar is carrying on with the fast,” a release said.
Many people including slum dwellers are joining the relay fast daily. —PTI
