Cops rescue 15 from child labour; arrest 9
Fifteen children were rescued from forced child labour on Thursday in a raid conducted by the city police at Bhandup. The police raided restaurants, eateries, a bakery and scrap dealers’ shops and rescued the children. They also arrested nine persons. The case was later handed over to the Bhandup police for further investigations.
The raids were a collaborative operation between the Social Service Branch, Bhandup police and officers from the DCP’s office. “The raid was planned over a period of four days after receiving several tip-offs from informants about minor children being made to work under strenuous conditions. Fifteen children, all boys, were rescued. Eleven hailed from U.P., three from Bihar and one from Rajasthan,” said senior police inspector Srirang Nadgauda from Bhandup police station. The raids were conducted at around 12 pm at Chapal Galli, Nepali Galli, Darga Road, and Sonapur Lane at Bhandup (west).
ACP Feroze Patel said, “We have registered a case under sections 3 and 14 of the Child Labour (Prohibition and Protection) Act and section 23 and 26 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act.” If booked under the former, the accused could be sentenced to a maximum jail term of 14 years and a fine of `50,000.
