CR plans luxurious ride on Matheran toy train
Journey on the heritage hill railway between Neral and Matheran is all set to become more relaxing as the Central Railway (CR) has decided to attach a “luxury coach” to the toy train.
The coach will have comfortable sofas, carpet, improved tapestry and swanky interiors. Passengers will have the option of relishing a hearty meal served by attendants inside the coach.
At present, the toy train has first class and second-class compartments and new swanky coach will be an addition. The new coach will offer chair car seats with armrest, unlike the bench type seats. With the new coach, visitors can get a scenic view of the hills and plains due to the transparent roofs.
The toy train covers a distance of 20 kms, over large swathes of forest territory. “We will design a tourist package for the train,” confirmed Subodh Jain, general manager, CR.
Authority has also decided to modify the first class compartment by reducing the number of seats from 18 to 16. This has been done to provide extra leg-space for passengers.
The toy train is a major hit, as Matheran is the only hill station in the country where vehicles are not permitted. It takes two hours to go up the hilly terrain and one hour 40 minutes to descend, as the train chugs at a
speed of 17 kmph on an average.
