Cricketer alleges domestic violence

A Sion-based international player from the country’s women’s cricket team has alleged dowry harassment by her husband and in-laws.
The victim, Nidhi Buley (26), a left-arm slow bowler, who has played test and ODI matches for the country, had lodged a complaint with the Sion police, which recently arrested the accused, who is a senior journalist in a daily newspaper.
Ms Buley had an arranged married on January 29, 2012 with Vihang Dinkarrao Saalgat (30), who works as a city editor for a Nagpur-based Hindi daily.
In her complaint to the Sion police, Ms Buley has alleged that after the marriage, her husband Vihang, father-in-law Dinkarrao (65), mother-in-law Usha (61) and sister in-law Aparna Yash Waghmare (36) had harassed her on various instances. The family had also asked the complainant to get `3 lakh from her parents to buy a car. However, when she refused, her husband allegedly beat her up.
Speaking to The Asian Age, Ms Buley said, “My husband also tried to kill me by covering my face with a plastic bag and strangulating me, but I managed to free myself. He actually wanted me to spend all my income on him and his family. I never had problem in spending my money on him, but he even wanted the money that I get as my match fees.” She further claimed that he threatened to divorce her. “He is yet to return valuables worth `2.78 lakh that my parents and relatives gave to the Saalgat family during the wedding. The police has not taken my complaint seriously and only arrested one person in the case,” she claimed.
Ms Buley’s husband Vihang, who was arrested under Section 498-A, 406 and 34 of the IPC on April 10, was later released on bail on April 19.
When contacted, Vihang refused all the allegations, stating that the complaint is “false and baseless”.
“She mislead the police by not informing the officials about our divorce case. A (dowry) case cannot be registered, if a divorce matter is on in court. The police did not even listen to my side of the story before arresting me,” he alleged.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
