Dead baby found floating in creek
A newborn male child was found dead in a Vikhroli creek on Thursday by locals, following which the police has initiated investigations. The baby is believed to be around six months old. The police suspects that it was abandoned as it was born out of wedlock. A case has been registered against unknown persons.
The boy was found floating in a plastic bag in a drain close to the creek in the Kannamwar Nagar area of Vikhroli by locals on Thursday morning. “The residents first assumed it to be a doll, but realised it was a dead baby after they fished it out. They then called the control room, following which the information was relayed to us,” said an officer from the Vikhroli police station. A part of the creek water flows into the drain, which originates from the Ghatkopar (east) area. The police suspects the body was dumped in Ghatkopar and that it subsequently flowed into Vikhroli. “The body was severely bloated, making it difficult to determine the age. Doctors at the Rajawadi Hospital have reserved their opinion on the cause of death. It seems to be a case of abandoning the child due to financial hardship or despair,” said Vilas Chavan, PI from Vikhroli police station.
The police has registered a case under sections 317 (exposure or abandonment of child under twelve years) and 318 (concealment of birth by secret disposal of dead body)
under the Indian Penal Code.
The police will make inquiries with local hospitals in Ghatkopar and Vikhroli to know if any woman had recently delivered a baby boy.
