Debit card theft costs lady
A 42-year-old woman suffered a double blow when her purse was stolen from the JJ Hospital on Thursday and later, money was withdrawn from her bank account using her debit card. The woman was attending to her ailing mother and had taken her for an X-ray. On her return, she found her purse missing. Soon, money from her bank account was withdrawn .It was, however, later revealed that the woman had jotted down her card pin in a diary, which the thief used to withdraw money.
Deepika Deepak Sawant (42), a resident of Vasai (west) had come to JJ Hospital on Thursday afternoon to admit her mother who was diagnosed with stomach ulcers. “We were on the first floor in ward 6. The doctor asked us to get an X-ray done so we took her to the X-ray room. I was carrying a purse, which had my belongings including my two debits cards, railway pass and `800 in cash. There was a woman sitting right besides us,” said Ms Sawant in her statement.
They returned around 15 minutes later.
“I then started looking for my purse which was missing. The woman from earlier was also nowhere to be seen, but she soon returned and when I asked her about the purse, she said she was also not in the room for a while,” Ms Sawant said. She then filed a complaint with the JJ Marg police.
However, around two hours later, Deepika received three consecutive messages from her bank that a total of `17,000 had been withdrawn from her account. “I am yet to coordinate with my bank and inform the police of this new development since I have fallen sick now,” she said. Senior inspector Sashikant Surve of JJ Marg police said, “We will scan the CCTV footage to identify the person who stole the purse.”
