Degree college teachers to join fray

Teachers of degree colleges have followed in the footsteps of junior college teachers and announced their decision to boycott examination work. Acco-rding to Maharashtra Junior College Teachers’ Union (MJCTU) officials, schoolteachers have also confirmed their support, but will not be boycotting exam work for the SSC exams.
Speaking about their ongoing agitation, Amar Singh, president of the MJCTU said that apart from the 60,000 junior college teachers in the state, who have joined the boycott, degree college teachers have gone a step ahead by refusing all examination work. “School teachers do not have a representation in any major union, hence they have pledged their support to MJCTU. They have said that though they will not be able to boycott assessment and moderation, their moral support is with us,” said Mr Singh.
Prof. R. Sadasivan, member of the Bombay University and College Teachers’ Union (Buctu), said that unlike last year, when they allowed the exams to be conducted this year they have decided to stop exams. “Teachers have refused to make the model question papers and hence there is no question of having the exams at all,” said Prof. Sadasivan.
An official from the higher and technical education ministry said that the issue was being dealt with on a war-footing after the chief minister intervened in the matter and asked the deputy chief minister and education ministers to get the matter resolved at the earliest.
Prof. Sadasivan further warned, “With exams not being held, the universities and colleges in the state will not be able to complete the current academic year. If the government delays things, the agitations of both, the degree and junior colleges, will stretch into the next academic year which in turn will lead to a total collapse.”
Mr Singh also said that it will be difficult to conduct the profes-sional exams like the CET due to the boycott.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
