‘Depressed’ photojournalist found hanging at home

Senior photojournalist Gajanan Ghurye from Mumbai committed suicide at his residence in the early hours of Saturday. Ghurye was said to be suffering from some health problems resulting in depression, which allegedly caused him to take the drastic step. He is survived by his wife and daughter.
Deputy police commissioner D. Kulkarni confirmed the incident. According to the police, the 58-year-old photojournalist was found hanging from a ceiling fan by his family members at his residence in Sai Charan apartments in the Shivaji Park area of Dadar.
Ghurye was a famous political photographer and had cordial relations across all political parties. “The political photographer was ill for quite some time and this could be the reason behind the extreme step,” the DCP said. He informed that a case has been registered at Shivaji Park police station.
One of his close relatives also confirmed that Ghurye was suffering from depression and had low blood pressure. “He had isolated himself in a room of his third floor apartment,” said a relative, who did not wish to be named. However, nobody knows the actual reason behind the suicide.
“The senior photojournalist was an extremely talented person in his field. The media has lost a very talented and efficient photographer,” said deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar after expressing his deep condolences on his demise.
Ghurye had a positive start to his 35 year -long career after receiving encouragement from the then chief minister Vasantdada Patil. Mr Patil had very good relations with him as a result of which Ghurye became very popular across all political parties. Consequently, the responsibility of covering political programmes, be it protests or rallies in Mumbai and adjoining areas, were entrusted to him.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.
