Despite arrest, prof draws salary

A medical lecturer from Tilak Ayurvedic College, who has been arrested for allegedly demanding dowry from his second wife and is currently in judicial custody, continues to draw his salary from the college.
Even though lecturer Sachin Deshpande has been thrice remanded to police custody, and is now lodged in Nashik Central Prison, the college has not suspended him.
Sachin’s second wife, Dr Mamta Deshpande claims that she tried to register an FIR in Guhagar in the Ratnagiri district, but the police told her that it was a family matter and asked her to settle the issue amicably with her husband.
“For nearly two months, I was unable to file an FIR in Pune because Sachin has influence. In fact, he filed false cases against us to harass us. On June 5, I lodged a complaint in the Sarkarwada police station in Nashik. Sachin was arrested on June 21 and remanded to police custody. The custody was then extended twice till June 27 and he was remanded to judicial custody on June 27,” said Dr Mamta.
She further claimed that she married Sachin on February 2, 2012 without knowledge that he had been previously married, as he is required to disclose according to law. It was only after the marriage that Sachin began harassing her for dowry, as he wanted funds to settle his divorce with his first wife. She alleged that when she gave birth to her daughter, the harassment only increased.
Dr Kuldip Raj Kohli, director of Ayush, which looks after the Indian streams of medicine, stated that legally, if the concerned person is in custody for 48 years, he is automatically suspended.
Speaking to The Asian Age, he said that the institutions are mostly private and it is the responsibility of the concerned institution to take action. He added that he had received a complaint from Dr Mamta and had sent the communication to the director of the college. Dr Sadanand Deshpande, principal of Tilak Ayurvedic College stated that he had received Dr Mamta’s plea and would seek action from the head of the institution.
