Disappointment over Headley sentence
At a time when politicians and public across the country are voicing their disapproval of the 35-year imprisonment sentence awarded to 26/11 plotter and conspirator David Coleman Headley, The Asian Age spoke to the family of the victims and those affected by the incident to get their opinion on the punishment.
Aspiring actor and fitness trainer Rahul Bhatt, whose proximity to 26/11 conspirator David Headley brought him under the scanner of anti-terror agencies, feels the 35-year prison term is “inappropriate” and wants him to be tried in India and “rot” in an Indian jail.
“Headley should be extradited to India and made to stand trial in Mumbai,” he said, adding, “I knew him as an American who loved children, dogs, everything about India and not as Daood Gilani. Because of the dichotomy of his personality, I didn’t know his insidious side,” he said.
A senior investigating official of 26/11 expressed disappointment over the judgment. He said, “The role of Headley is similar to that of Ajmal Kasab, who was recently hanged. Headley should have been extradited and tried in an Indian court. But, one of the conditions on which Headley confessed about his involvement was that he would not be extradited.”
Kavita Karkare, wife of former Anti-Terrorism Squad chief Hemant Karkare, who died during 26/11 attacks agreed with the investigating official. “Headley should have been hanged,” she said.
