Doppler radar has improved accuracy: imd
Two years after its installation at the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Mumbai centre, the Doppler radar has finally started to perform to its optimum limits. The IMD has claimed that the high-tech equipment has helped them
make more accurate weather predictions, especially in the monsoons.
The weather bureau said that though the Doppler radar is still under testing, it has been working well as far as the main purpose is concerned — rainfall predictions.
“We have been using the Doppler radar for forecasting purposes and it has been working absolutely fine. We have been getting data and forecasts accurately,” said N.Y. Apte, deputy director general, IMD.
This is the second Doppler radar in Maharashtra; Nagpur being the first in the state to get the hi-tech equipment. The radar’s coverage capacity is 500 km, but it is most effective up to 250-300 km, said the director of Doppler Radar Sunil Kamble, IMD Mumbai.
“We can now make predictions two hours ahead of rains and also have an estimate of the rainfall,” he added.

CR to take over maintenance?
ANAND MISHRA
MUMBAI, JUNE 18
Amidst much hue and cry for the sake of the Harbour line commuters, Cidco has agreed to hand over the maintenance work of 23 railway stations to the Central Railway which fall under its jurisdiction.
As a fallout of MP Sanjeev Naik’s agitation on Tuesday, the managing director of Cidco Sanjay Bhatia gave a written assurance to the MP that the corporation is willing to hand over the maintenance work of the stations, after working out the modalities. Public relations officer, Cidco, Mohan Ninawe confirmed the move and said, “Yes, we have given a written assurance to Mr Sanjeev Naik that Cidco is ready to hand over the maintenance work to the Central Railway, but all other financial modalities will be worked out by a joint survey.”
When contacted, DRM of CR, Mumbai division, Mukesh Nigam said, “We have not received any official communication from Cidco yet, but if it is so, then certainly it is a very positive development for the CR and the commuters.”
According to a senior railway official, “Cidco will have to give the CR almost `18 crore as part of the one-time replacement and recurring cost, while the outstanding due will be credited as annual surcharge.” It should be noted that the CR had imposed a Cidco surcharge of `1 to `6 on all tickets sold between CST and Panvel, Kharghar, Nerul and the Thane-Kalwa creek stretch, that was paid to the corporation for maintenance of the railway infrastructure in the Navi Mumbai area. In the last financial year, the CR paid surcharge to the tune of `40 crore to Cidco.
In the month of April, volunteers of the Aam Admi Party inspected a few stations of Navi Mumbai and discovered that basic facilities like cleanliness, safety,
passenger and other basic amenities had taken a hit, while encroachments and other menace were on the rise. The ATVM machines were not functioning, the CVM machines and tiles were broken and there were no dust bins on platforms.
