Drunk Pune bizman rams BMW into cops
In a case of drunk driving and hit-and-run, a 28-year-old Pune-based businessman and relative of a Judge rammed his speeding BMW car into two police constables during a nakabandi at Peddar Road in the early hours of Monday.
The accused, who says he is the vice-president of Human Rights Commission in Pune, and also claims to have “good political connections”, not only injured the on-duty policemen, but also tried to flee the spot with his girlfriend. However, after a wild police chase he was nabbed and remanded to one-day police custody by a local court.
Anil Raut, who lives at Wakad locality in Pimpri-Chinchwad of Pune, is an insurance agent and also deals in computer peripherals. The police said, although he is married and has a kid, he would come to Mumbai every Sunday to meet his 23-year-old girlfriend Archana Waghmare from Andheri. On Sunday night, he came to city in his BMW with registration number MH14-DF-666 and had dinner with Archana at the Novotel in Juhu. He also consumed alcohol and after that decided to go for a drive on Marine Drive. “While they were returning from Peddar Road, at around 1.30 am the policemen near the Gamadiya junction asked him to stop. However, Raut, who was in inebriated state, drove the vehicle rashly into two police constables after dashing into a Maruti Zen that was stopped by other policemen at the check point,” said Pradeep Lonandkar, senior inspector of Gamdevi police station. “After Raut fled the spot, our beat marshal chased him. However, after into a kilometre, Raut took his vehicle into a bylane and abandoned it. Before he could flee, our men nabbed Raut,” added Mr Lonandkar.
Constables Shyamsundar Nikam and Madhukar Shingade, who sustained injuries to their heads, legs and waist, were rushed to Bombay Hospital and after treatment were allowed to go home. Preliminary probe indicated that Raut was driving the vehicle under the influence of alcohol. His blood sample has been taken for test. He was arrested under Sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 353 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty) 427 (causing damage) and sections 134 (a) (b) and 185 (drunken driving) of Motor Vehicles Act, Mr Lonandkar said.
