Elevated corridor project gets nod
The Indian Railways is in the process of inviting tenders for the ambitious rail elevated corridor between Churchgate and Virar by the end of the financial year, Vinay Mittal, chairman railway board said, during his visit to the city to take review of the Western and Central Railways.
“We will sign the State Support Agreement with the Maharashtra government for the project next week,” said Mr Mittal.
Sources revealed that the project is likely to begin by December 2013. The project, which is set to boost the connectivity between Churchgate and Virar, will be built at a cost of `15,000 crore, and is expected to be completed by 2019.
Mr Mittal also stated that the railways is planning to run the first AC local train in the financial year 2013-14. “We are planning to introduce the first AC service on the suburban section of the WR. Initially, the services will be less, as we are not aware of the response it will get. We are deciding on the fare structure of these trains,” Mr Mittal said.
Speaking about Mumbai girl, Bhavika Mehta, who lost her leg while battling with a thief on board an express train in Ambala, Mr Mittal said, “We are in touch with the family and will continue to do so, while she is under treatment. We are trying our best to provide financial aid to her.”
