Exams to be held on schedule, says V-C

The vice-chancellor of the University of Mumbai has given a personal undertaking to the members of the senate that the final year exams of the arts, science and commerce streams will be held as per the announced schedule.
Dr Rajan Welukar, while responding to the queries of the senators during the meeting on Thursday, said that though the teachers had boycotted examination duty, the University would ensure that students were not inconvenienced in any way.
With teachers of the University and colleges affiliated to the University under the banner of Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teachers Organisation (MFUCTO) announcing a total boycott of examination duty till their demands were met, the university has been struggling to get the examination process started. In addition to this, the colleges have been hard pressed to conduct practical exams of the science stream as a result of which students are being forced to visit their college almost everyday.
Mr Dilip Karande, management council member chided the University for failing to resolve the issue by pursuing the government and also condemned the action of the government for denying the teachers their right.
“Students are tense and instead of concentrating on their exams they are worried whether the exams would be re-scheduled. During the TYBSc practical exams, students faced a lot of problems. The University will now have to conduct a re-exam for over 40 per cent students who could not appear for the exams. Consequently, we want to know from the officials whether they can ensure that they will be conducting TYBCom theory exam as per the schedule,” he said.
Dr Welukar, said that he has been putting all the efforts at his level to ensure that the matter is resolved. “If tomorrow the state government decides that it will take a decision in the matter only after three months, we cannot just get agitated and let the students, and the working of the University suffer. As a university, we must keep working,” said Dr Welukar, justifying the varsity’s stand.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
