Expect showers, few heavy spells in the next 2 days

After a lull of over a week, the monsoon has come back with modest rainfall on Monday. Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) says there will be rain and showers continuously in the city and suburbs and there can be a couple of heavy spells, too.
In the 24-hour span between Sunday and Monday, Colaba recorded 32.4 mm, whereas Santa Cruz recorded
only 7 mm of rainfall. On Monday, too, Colaba and Santa Cruz received 11.6 mm and 7.6 mm of rainfall, respectively, till 5.30 pm.
However, there were other areas in the city that recorded much more rainfall between Sunday and Monday. In the western suburbs, areas like Dahisar received 89.3 mm, Kandivali 84.56 mm, and Borivali 84.29 mm, recording top three readings in the 24-hour period.
The Met department, meanwhile, has predicted that the city is definitely set for modest rainfall in the coming days. The lack of rain was because of a weak offshore trough, said the Met department.
“The offshore trough stretching from the Gujarat coast to the Kerala coast is now strengthening. Also, the westerly winds are getting stronger,” said V.K. Rajeev, director of weather forecast, IMD, Mumbai.
The city is well on its way to get more than normal rainfall this year. Till Monday morning, Colaba had covered 46.73 per cent of its annual
average rainfall of 2,220 mm, by receiving 1,037.4 mm from the start of this season. While Santa Cruz received 1,073.8 mm and covered 41.33 per cent of its annual average of 2,598 mm.
On Monday, the temperatures too dipped
due to the overcast sky all day. Colaba recorded a maximum temperature of 27.5 degree Celsius, while Santa Cruz recorded 28.9 degree Celsius. The humidity levels were understandably high through the day.
According to IMD, the next few days will see ample rainfall. “A low pressure area is about to form over the Orissa side of the Bay of Bengal. Whenever there is a development like this,
the winds tend to become stronger. We can thus expect some heavy rainfall in the next two days,” said Mr Rajeev.
The weather department’s forecast for Tuesday says that there will be occasional rain or showers with one or two heavy spells in city and suburbs.
