FFE files contempt plea against state
The Forum for Fairness in Education (FFE) has filed a petition in Bombay HC against the state, its agencies and the Association of Managements of Unaided Private Medical and Dental College, Mahara-shtra (AMUPMDC).
The PIL seeks quashing of the corrigendum which allows unaided colleges from implementing the SC guidelines that explained how admissions were to be conducted, but empowered the high courts to initiate contempt proceedings if SC orders are violated.
According to Jayant Jain, president of FFE, the PIL also seeks compensation for students who have suffered on account of violation of the order by unaided colleges and the government officers. “Inquiry is sou-ght into the conduct of the management of the colleges. Following the findings, the management of the concerned colleges should be taken over by the state, Centre, the Maharashtra Legal Aid Authorities or any association that the court deems fit,” said Mr Jain.
The petition highlights the cause of students who despite being meritorious and deserving admission were deprived of their rights. The petition is expected to come up for hearing next week.

Man stabs wife in fit of rage, goes absconding
Age Correspondent
Mumbai, May 10
A 55-year-old sales tax deputy commissioner in the state government allegedly attacked his 43-year-old wife with a knife over marital issues at their resid-ence in Borivali on Thursday night. The accused is presently untraceable, the police said.
According to the Borivali police, the incident took place at around 9.30 pm in Jayesh Apartment on the Vazira Naka area of Borivali (west). The accused has been identified as Deepak Sankhe, a deputy commissioner of sales tax in Nallasopara.
Sankhe had a verbal spat with his wife Shobha, who works as a stenographer in the Mantralaya, and threatened to kill her. Soon after the spat, Sankhe picked up a knife and in a fit of rage, stabbed Shobha on her left arm.
Shobha started screaming for help after which Sankhe fled from the spot and locals rushed her to Bhagwati Hospital. She was discharged after being treated for her injuries. Shobha then approac-hed the Borivali police station on Friday and registered a case against her husband.
“We have registered a case against Sankhe and are looking out for him,” said an official from the Borivali police station.
