First of 7 lakes overflows
Tulsi has become the first lake to overflow this monsoon. Interestingly, it has attained this feat by crossing the overflow mark nearly two months earlier than the last year.
According to the civic hydraulic department officials, Tulsi Lake started overflowing on Friday at 11 am. Last year, the lake could reach the overflow mark only by September 4. The overflow mark of the Tulsi is 139.17 metres.
Tulsi Lake originates from the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivali. It supplies 18 million litres (ml) water daily to Aarey Colony and some parts of Powai.
According to the civic officials, the feat of first overflow normally goes to Modak Sagar Lake due to heavy rainfall in the Thane district. However, this year even the city area has received equally good rainfall.
Following Tulsi, the Tansa Lake is also on the verge of overflow. It has already reached the mark of 127.97 metres against its overflow mark of 128.63 metres.
As per the data available with the civic body, there has been a rainfall of 8,474.82 mm in catchment areas of all seven lakes —Modak Sagar, Tansa, Vehar, Tulsi, Upper Vaitarana, Bhatsa and Middle Vaitarana — supplying water to the city. In the last 24 hours, the water stock in catchments areas has risen by 85,000 ml, making the total stock 7.69 lakh ml, which amounts to seven months supply of water. “These are hearty trends as far as city’s water supply is concerned. Tansa will also start overflowing within a day or two,” said an official from the hydraulic department.
