Free coaching for minority students

The state Cabinet on Wednesday approved a free coaching programme for competitive examinations like UPSC and MPSC for minority students of the state.
The programme —Maulana Azad Free Teaching and Affiliation Scheme — is expected to benefit 4,000 minority candidates. The government believes that the coaching programme will help increase the representation of the minority community in the government sector.
Speaking about the scheme, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said that the Cabinet decided to open coaching centres at seven places across the state to provide free coaching facilities to minority students. The list comprises Mumbai, Thane, Amravati, Aurangabad, Nagpur, Pune and Nashik.
“Apart from UPSC and MPSC examinations, coaching for Common Entrance Test (CET) examination, chartered accountant, law and MBA examinations will also be provided to minority candidates,” minority affairs minister Arif Naseem Khan said.
He added that the initiative was in line with the 15-point programme of the Prime Minister made for the uplift of the minority community.
“We believe that by this initiative the representation of the minority community in the administration will definitely increase,” the minister asserted.
He informed that out of the 4,000 seats, 250 are reserved for UPSC examinations, 250 for MPSC examinations, 400 for banking examinations, 600 for CET and the remaining 2,000 seats have been reserved as special category.
Candidates will be selected on the basis of the merit list from colleges.
The Cabinet has also approved another coaching scheme for girls. Under the scheme, girls will be provided coaching for competitive examinations like IIT, JEE, AIEEE and the International Olympiad.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
