Friend murdered octroi agent: Cops

The Mumbai crime branch has solved the murder case of an octroi collection agent, who was found dead in a jungle in Dahisar a few days ago, with the arrest of another octroi collection agent. The accused committed the crime with the intention of robbing the gold ornaments of the deceased to collect money for his sister’s wedding in Bihar. He took the help of a friend who is still absconding.
The arrested accused has been identified as Mohan Mishra (19). He was arrested for allegedly murdering his friend, octroi agent Lavkesh Upadhyay (23), whose body was found in a jungle near a checkpoint in Dahisar on April 10.
His face was severely damaged.
Along with the Dahisar police, Unit-12 of the Mumbai crime branch was also conducting a parallel probe in the case. During investigations, the police got to know that the deceased was an octroi agent and had a friend named Mohan Mishra, also an agent.
“During the probe, Mishra said that his sister’s marriage was scheduled in the last week of this month in Bihar and he was falling short of money to meet the expenditures. So he decided to rob Upadhyay who used to wear heavy gold chains. He hatched the conspiracy along with his friend Anshu and on the pretext of serving Upadhyay alcohol, both of them took him to an isolated location on April 10 and killed him by smashing his face with a big stone before robbing him of his ornaments valued at around `1 lakh,” said Ambadas Pote, deputy police commissioner (detection-1).

3 held for chain-snatchings in trains
Age Correspondent
Mumbai, April 22

The Mumbai Central Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested three men, including a jeweller, for robbing gold valuables from women in running local trains and then melting the stolen gold to make new jewellery.
According to an official, the number of robberies involving gold valuables were increasing between Mumbai Central and Dadar railway stations. The police then studied the pattern of crimes taking place and accordingly laid a trap.
On April 18, one such chain-snatcher was arrested red-handed by officials after he snatched a gold chain from a woman’s neck in the second-class compartment of a Virar-bound slow local train at Mahalaxmi railway station. During sustained interrogation, the accused, Sumit Javlekar (20) confessed to committing two more robberies at Mahalaxmi and Mumbai Central railway stations in the recent past. Javlekar had robbed 10 gram and 13 gram gold chains from two women.
He later spilled the beans on his accomplice Kiran Yevle (23), a resident of Saathrasta in Mahalaxmi, who helped him dispose of the stolen valuables. Yevle was arrested on Monday. He then led the police to 50-year-old Jagdish Soni, a jeweller by profession.
