FYJC list evokes mixed reactions

The second merit list for the FYJC online admissions announced on Sunday saw mixed reactions from nearly a lakh students who had either opted for betterment option or had not been allotted a seat in the first merit list.
According to officials, nearly 45,000 students had opted for the betterment option after having been allotted seats in the first merit list and almost 35 per cent of the students had got seats allotted as per their preferences.
Speaking about the allotment of the seats, N. B. Chavan, deputy director of education (schools) said that students, who had
not been allotted a seat in the first round, were allotted one in the second round along with students who had taken the betterment option.
“Almost all the students have now been allotted a seat at least once.
Those opting for betterment option can do so by securing
provisional admission on the seat allotted to them by July 2. Those who fail to do so will not be considered for the third list,” said Mr Chavan.
Nearly 66,000 students of the 1.72 lakh who were allotted seats in the first merit list had failed to secure admissions and, therefore, were left out of the second merit list. They have no option, but to take admission to the college allotted to them in the first list.
According to a statement released by the deputy directors’ office a total of 34,436 students had applied for the betterment option. The break up includes science (11,949), commerce (21,196) and arts (1,291).
In total, around 1 lakh students, including the 22,000 students who were not allotted a seat in the first round, were allotted seats on Sunday. The admissions will start on Monday and those not satisfied with the allotment will have to secure provisional admission by Tuesday.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
